Different types of acne

If you have acne, your pores are clogged with sebum, bacteria and fat acids. Sebum deposits that cause inflammation in the surrounding skin due to excessive sebum production. Acne can cause development of acne scars.

Acne types

Acne comes in several specific forms. Common types of acne are:

Acne comedonica

The comedones, also known as blackheads, mar your skin. The skin looks bumpy due to the presence of many sebum accumulations. Although the occurrence of inflammation is not excluded, pimples are hardly ever seen in this form of acne.

Acne conglobata

This causes very severe inflammation of the sebaceous glands, which leads to thick, red and painful bumps (infiltrates), which usually occur on the back.

Acne excoriée des jeunes filles

A difficult French name for an acne form which is also called ‘scratch acne’. Usually acne excoriée occurs in young girls and women (jeunes filles), but it is also seen in young boys and men.

Acne tarda

is a form of acne that often develops in women aged 25 years or older and is most commonly manifested on the lower half of the face.

Acne Vulgaris

‘vulgaris’ is Latin for ‘ordinary’. This is the most common form of acne where all symptoms may occur in a milder form.

Hidradenitis supperativa

In this form of acne, the abnormalities occur in the groin and armpits.


Pimples if your face or body is marked by red bumps (papules), pimples (pustules) and blackheads (comedones) or subcutaneous inflammation, you suffer from acne.

Adolescents Acne often occurs in young people between the age of 12 and 24. The most common areas of the body on which acne manifests are the face, back and chest.
